Night Photography
Read MoreEach week, Courier photographer Rachel Leathe takes more photographs than we can print in each issue. Here’s a few of her favorites from the past week that were not printed.
I’ve always been a night person. There is just something so intimate and powerful about darkness. When I was in high school I used to sneak out of my parent’s house just to walk around the neighborhood. What is clear cut or bland in the daytime become eerie and beautiful at night. A rock, a fence, a flower. Darkness adds a new dimension to everything.
Since I moved to Ottumwa last week, I’ve had an itch to go walking but little time to explore the city at night. So when I saw the fog rolling in Tuesday evening I thought there would be no better time to capture this luminescent city. As I was setting up my tripod, it struck me how different it is walking around Ottumwa than it would be in a big city. I walked around for hours without seeing more than a handful of people.
